Running Head: CONSTRAINTS ON IMPLICIT STATISTICAL LEARNING Implicit Statistical Learning and Language Acquisition: Experience-Dependent Constraints on Learning

چکیده
Acquiring spoken language involves implicitly learning the statistical relations among language units. In this chapter, we review recent behavioral and neurophysiological findings from our research group that illuminate the relation of this type of ‘implicit statistical learning’ (ISL) to language acquisition. First, we review evidence illustrating that ISL mechanisms enable the learner to predict upcoming language units. Second, we show modality constraints affecting the operation of ISL mechanisms, with auditory and visual learning biased to learn different types of patterns. Third, we demonstrate that under certain developmental conditions typical ISL abilities are altered, which can detrimentally affect subsequent language acquisition. These findings highlight the experience-dependent nature of ISL and its relation to typical and atypical language acquisition. Introduction Acquiring one’s native language involves at least to some extent implicitly learning the statistical or distributional relations among linguistic units. By “implicit” we simply mean that learning proceeds largely automatically, unintentionally, and often without the learner’s conscious awareness . By “statistical” we mean that language is made up of complex probabilistic associations among language units. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that this kind of learning is present very early in life, allowing the infant to acquire knowledge about the statistical regularities of language input, which appears necessary for supporting typical language development. In fact, these learning mechanisms are thought to be important not only in language but also in other domains. Especially relevant are situations involving learning items in a sequence: much of an individual’s everyday life requires understanding the order that certain units or

Aligning implicit learning and statistical learning: Two approaches, one phenomenon
The past 15-20 years have witnessed a particularly strong interest in our ability to rapidly extract structured information from the environment. This fundamental process of human cognition is widely believed to underpin many complex behaviors – from language development and social interaction to intuitive decision making and music cognition – so this interest spans practically all branches of ...
متن کاملThe Comparative Effect of Task Type and Learning Conditions on the Achievement of Specific Target Forms
The completion mode (individual, collaborative) of the tasks and the conditions under which these modes are performed have been reported to play an important role in language learning. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of employing text editing tasks performed both individually and collaboratively, on the achievement of English grammar under explicit and implicit learning condi...
متن کاملThe Long-Term Effect of Implicit and Explicit Corrective Feedback on Accuracy of EFL Learners’ Descriptive Writing Skill
Since the emergence of the process-oriented approach to second language writing instruction two main questions have been what and how error feedback should be given to the students. The question of whether teachers should provide feedback on grammar in the writing assignments of English as a foreign language students, and if so how, has been a matter of considerable debate in the field of secon...
متن کاملThe effect of implicit input enhancement on learning grammatical collocations
Collocation is known as one of the most problematic areas in learning a second language and it seems that if one has tendency to improve his or her communication ability in another language, the elaboration of collocation using competence is among the most important issues. This study investigated the role of implicit input enhancement in teaching grammatical collocations for Iranian EFL learne...

The domain-general learning mechanisms elicited in incidental learning situations are of potential interest in many research fields, including language acquisition, object knowledge formation and motor learning. They have been the focus of studies on implicit learning for nearly 40 years. Stemming from a different research tradition, studies on statistical learning carried out in the past 10 ye...
